UIA COVID-19 INFORMATION HUB

The UIA is organising a COVID-19 Information Hub in response to the  COVID-19 pandemic. The essential role of this initiative is to compile material on the efforts and expertise of the world’s architects, including emergency healthcare facilities, policy initiatives and practice, legal and financial measures relevant to architects in various countries. We welcome contributions from our Member Sections & Working Bodies on any projects related to the pandemic.

INTERNATIONAL IDEAS COMPETITION 

ALUMIL S.A., an international, Greece-based company dealing in aluminium and advanced architectural aluminium systems, has launched ArXellence 2, an open, one-stage, international ideas competition for the Design of the New Central Business District of Thessaloniki, Greece. The competition seeks innovative concepts for the regeneration of a declining urban area of Thessaloniki.

HYP CUP 2020 - STUDENT COMPETITION

The 9th edition of the UIA-HYP Cup organised annually by the School of Architecture at Tianjin University and Urban Environment Design (UED) Magazine invites entries from students of architecture around the world. This year"s theme is Architecture in Transformation. It explores the tensions between architecture and the city as well as between architecture and nature in an increasingly interconnected contemporary world.

ARCHITECTURAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN COMPETITION 

Due to the ongoing international health crisis, the international competition for the architectural landscape design concept of Tuchkov Buyan Park in Saint Petersburg (Russia) has postponed the deadline for submissions from 8 May 2020 to 7 August 2020. This competition was launched in November 2019 with an open call for expressions of interest. An international jury selected 8 teams to present their design concepts for the Tuchkov Buyan Park. The jury will meet in September 2020 to evaluate the entries.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECT & IDEAS COMPETITION

Due to the ongoing international health crisis, the registration deadline for the international competition to redevelop a square shared by the Italian city of Gorizia and the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica has been extended from 6 April to 1 June 2020. This competition, that is open to all architects from around the world, has also extended the deadline for submissions to 31 August. The jury meeting will take place on 9-12 September and the results announced on 16 September 2020.

UIA Member Sections are invited to respond to the online survey prepared by the UIA"s SDG Commission to better understand its members’ awareness of issues around sustainable development and the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Only 1 response is required from each Member Section.

 CANADA: RAIC GOLD MEDAL

The RAIC Gold Medal - the highest distinction the Institute can bestow in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture- has been awarded to visionary architect Blanche Lemco van Ginkel. Born in London, England, in 1923, her architecture and urban planning are marked by a deep social purpose and a desire to produce comfortable modern environments, emphasizing cultural and collective values.

UNITED KINGDOM: RIBA NORMAN FOSTER TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP

The deadline for applications for the RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship is 24 April 2020.  The scholarship offers £7,000 to a student of architecture demonstrating the “potential for outstanding achievement and original thinking on issues that relate to the sustainable survival of cities and towns.” Invited schools may nominate only one student.

FRANCE

The UIA pays tribute to Architect Zygmund Knyszewski, who passed away 23 March 2020. Past treasurer of the French section of the UIA. Zygmund was passionate about the environment and was a pioneer of bioclimatic design. He contributed significantly to UIA Congresses and was an active member of the UIA Work Programmes on places of worship and built heritage. Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

INDONESIA

The UIA is saddened to learn of the passing of Ahmad Djuhara, President of the Indonesian Institute of Architects (Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia-IAI). Djuhara founded the architectural firm Djuhara + Djuhara together with his wife, architect Wendy Djuhara, and was a major voice for architecture and design throughout Indonesia. The UIA extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends

DENMARK: PhD SCHOLARSHIP

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, is offering a full Ph.D. scholarship on the “Impact of Architecture on Epidemics”. The successful candidate will also contribute to the 2023 UIA World Congress (Copenhagen), as part of the UIA"s ongoing mission for knowledge-sharing among the world"s architects.
